Chelsea Apartment

Our renovation of this loft in Chelsea had two seemingly competing goals: to preserve the “lofty” feel of the apartment—the spare geometry and the high ceilings—while creating a warm and inviting space. Could right angles, hard materials, and neutral colors feel homey?

In the kitchen and dining area, we installed dark walnut cabinetry and dropped the ceiling to create a more intimate space set aside from the dining room. The luster of the kitchen millwork is mirrored in the dining area’s brass chandelier, which, though its shape is angular and its material is “hard,” is softened by its color and its gentle sheen. Although white walls were essential to the apartment’s stylish, austere look, we found moments to temper that white, not with paint color, but with cladding: limestone in the shower of the master bath, chevron-patterned tile that turns from bathroom wall to floor, wood that wraps the walls of the master bedding. The overall effect is one of elegant simplicity cloaked in warmth and comfort.
